What Home Automation Can Do for You

It's quite amazing to see home automation in movies and TV. You may think that it's all camera tricks, and some of it is, but many devices and gadgets you see portrayed are available to the average person.

Home automation is now widely available. It's like it becomes part of the home, just like electric lights did 100 years ago. And, like then, there are those people who regard these devices as a waste of money or just plain silly. Of course, different people have different needs and uses for home automation.

Home automation can be divided into two categories: security and convenience.

Alarm systems are popular these days and you'll find them combined with total home automation systems more and more often. Old style alarm systems simply sounded an alarm when there was a break-in or other incident. Newer systems not only sound an alarm but contact a monitoring center, sometimes by radio or cellular connection, and turn on lights and make other noise, like a barking dog.

Home automation alarms systems can also be wired into a fire and carbon monoxide detection systems to further protect you and your family from dangerous situations. You can also add in health monitoring gadgets for people who have health problems or disabilities.

Most traditional alarms are primarily designed to protect your property, but not you. But if you utilize HA, you can have control over the whole situation. Personal safety is greatly achieved through home automation. Aside from protecting your property, you also help protect yourself and your family members from injuries like tripping over/falling down the stairs. One switch is enough, and you're guaranteed with utmost security.

Beyond safety and security there is also convenience. With today's home automation gadgets, everything can be done with just one switch.

For many years, you have been used to turning on lights and turning them off as you left rooms, setting the temperature on heating and cooling, locking doors and so forth. With home automation you can have this done automatically for you. You can do it with a single click on a control box and, with the right connections, you can even do this by cell phone or over the Internet.
